Macrame

Macrame lace is a special handmade technique, which is a knotty weaving. Twine, decorative cords, fishing line, etc. are used for work. Where did macrame come from?

The history of macrame began in ancient times, when mankind first invented the technique of tying knots. It is believed that this technique first appeared in Ancient China around VIII – IX centuries. But recent archaeological excavations confirm that at that time knot weaving was also actively used by other peoples of the world in its various corners.

In the Middle Ages many craftswomen were engaged in creation of products in the macrame technique and today they can be contemplated in the paintings of famous artists, in particular, Sandro Botticelli. The technique became very popular in England. Then using macrame created expensive lace to decorate the ladies dresses. The modern name known to us, the technique has received only in the XIX century, and the great popularity of this type of hand-made received in the beginning of the last century, in particular, in the design of houses.

Techniques macrame knots

Until our days have survived only a few types of knots, which are used to make macrame:

  • Hercules (basic) knot.
  • Square and horizontal flat and triple horizontal knot.
  • A common square knot.
  • Right and left flat knot.

With the knots presented, regular scissors, pads, pins, hook, centimeter, and glue materials, modern artisans create amazingly beautiful things. Thread is fixed on pillows and pulled by means of weights. The needlewoman twists them tightly together using special knotting techniques. As a rule, already dyed threads are involved in the creation of products, but, if necessary, they can be painted in any color already after the end of the work.

Features of creation of macrame

In the work are used silk or woolen threads, which must be carefully processed. In the first case, silk is smeared with glue, so that the work does not unravel, in silk is well twisted.
